In addition to today’s Internet Marketing Monitor coverage, we felt these stories were worth pulling out of the multitude of news items for May 16, 2007:
As part of it’s “Searchology Day”, Google made a slew of announcements. But even without those announcements, today was certainly a “Googley day”. The biggest announcements are problem the ones dealing with universal search (official press release) and navigational changes. I won’t go into the details because Search Engine Land has done an excellent job of breaking them all down. Needless to say… I think these are great changes. In other Google news, hints that Google’s PowerPoint-like presentation application are around the corner are starting to pop up in Gmail. Some users have noticed “View as slideshow” links in Gmail with PowerPoint presentations are attached. And some SEOs claim to be noticing the effects of algorithm changes aimed at cracking down on paid links. I’m not sure that’s what they’re seeing, though. I’ve noticed a recent change in Google traffic across almost every site I track… and none of them contain paid links. Something else might be up… but I doubt Mountain View has already rolled any new algorithms or changes out.
It seems like only yesterday when I covered another AOL advertising acquisition. Oh wait… that’s because it was only yesterday! As TechCrunch reports, AOL has purchased a controlling interest in the German company. Like Third Screen Media, ADTECH will become an independent subsidiary of AOL-owned Advertising.com. What do they think they can do? Build a huge business based on Internet advertising? ;)
Don’t get me wrong - a clear mission statement is a great way to motivate and rally the troops around a single goal. But COME ON, Yahoo! You’re even playing follow the leader with this stuff?!? Google recently announced their new motto: “Search, Ads, and Apps”. Yahoo, always the eternal second fiddler, has announced their own revisted motto: “To connect people to their passions, communities, and the world’s knowledge”. I’m gunnin’ for you Yahoo… I really am. But I would love to be able to NOT predict your next move by watching Mountain View.
This is a question you should ask yourself as soon as the urge to take advantage of a situation for linkbaiting purposes pops into your head: am I crossing the line with this. Matt has talked about crossing the linkbait line in the past. If you’re going to engage in linkbaiting, you’re eventually going to take one step too many… and then you’re going to have to deal with the consequences.
It’s no doubt that del.icio.us can be a great generator of traffic. Folks are even starting to use del.icio.us as a search engine… especially the popular pages. It couldn’t hurt to get a link or two on a page related to your website’s content and these four tips are a great place to start. If Google hadn’t been so busy today it would have been yet another sleepy day in the world of search engine news. Thanks, Google! Until tomorrow… have a great night!
